House of the Arrephores

Close to the Acropolis’ rock edge, the temple handmaids were living in the House of the Arrephores (meaning: Athena’s four temple handmaids). The young girls were from high society Athenian families and passed nine months on the Acropolis. Here they weaved the peplos, the statue’s robe, together with the priestesses. Twenty bases of Arrephores’ statues have remained up to today.

From the court adjacent to the building, a staircase led to Agraulos’ grotto, another one to the Peripatos circuit, a walkabout around the Acropolis.
