The old Acropolis Museum

Acropolis Museum

The old Acropolis Museum is located where once stood the Heroon of Pandion. It was built from 1949 to 1953, after carefully choosing the place of construction. And it has been well chosen with the museum’s sunk position, which is proved by the Acropolis’ whole impression, that has not been at all affected by the museum. In 2001, however, the construction of the new museum was started on the area of a former casern downhill the Acropolis.

In October 2007, the objects were brought from the old into the new museum, which is destinated to be home to about 300 statues, fragments of Parthenon’s frieze and about 4,000 smaller artefacts. The transpassing took place with the aid of three creanes, excitedly observed by culture minister Michalis Liapis; the whole project was said to be technically highly complicated. It costed around 1,6 billions euros.
